My Writing
I write for kids because books were the air that I breathed when I was a child. They were my world, my escape. This may sound sappy, but with every word I write, no matter the topic or the age of the audience, I love knowing that I'm contributing one small piece to the world of words that I believe kids need. I write all kinds of stuff, but most of my work is poetry or nonfiction.
I love to write poetry! I write snappy verse for preschoolers, nonfiction poems, and lyrical, serious poems for older readers. I also like to write humorous poems. Poetic forms are fun—acrostics are my favorite! My poems have appeared in magazines, websites, traveling art exhibits, testing materials, and—soon—books!
For nonfiction, I've written mostly for elementary school kids. My books explore careers, animal habits, the Trail of Tears, canoeing, and tons of other topics. I also wrote a self-help book for teens who are living on their own. Click below for more details.
