Writing Tips for Kids
You as a writer will have to try lots of different methods of writing to see what works best for you. But here are some ideas that can help almost any writer!
Read tons. Tons. Read lots of different kinds of things to figure out what you love and what you can’t stand.
Write all sorts of stuff. Write stories, poems, songs, jump-rope chants, scripts for plays, articles to share information. Even if you always write about the same topic (I knew a kid who only wrote about spiders), try different forms.
Read how-to books that make sense to you. I love Ralph Fletcher’s how-to books, and I wrote a book called Write Your Own Poetry, for kids about 5th grade and up. Find books that inspire you to write more!
If you’re writing and loving it and don’t want to do anything else with it, that’s fine! If you like it but you want to improve, then find a trusted editor. Find someone who will read your work and tell you honestly but kindly what works and what areas still need to be worked on.
