Writing Poetry
Writing poetry is like jumping off a high dive. You close your eyes, hold your breath, and jump. Then you take the words that have splashed out and play with them until they sparkle in the best possible design. You have to make leaps and try new things and take your writing in unexpected directions. I always find it a little scary because I'm used to writing according to specific editorial guidelines for my work-for-hire nonfiction books. But it's also my favorite way to write!
I've won some contests and received some honorable mentions for my poems, and now I've finally got a contract for a book! Clarion will be publishing my picture book poetry collection called STAMPEDE! I'm thrilled with this and can't wait to see which illustrator they choose. Stay tuned.
Lots of people have questions about how to start writing poetry. Here's a printable list of websites and books and poets that I find terrific and inspiring. You can also check out Pinch of Poetry, where each month I talk about a poetic technique or form I work with and offer a poem starter. I hope you like them!
