Presentations for Teachers

I'm happy to offer a one-hour in-service booktalk called Playing with Poetry. In it, I share lots of simple, engaging methods for teaching poetry in the classroom in a way that meets Minnesota's curriculum standards for poetry.

Kids are supposed to:

• Read from and listen to poetry texts
• Identify patterns of sounds such as rhyme and rhythm
• Perform expressive oral readings of poetry
• Write poetry to express meaning
• Describe how meaning is conveyed in poetry

How can you as a teacher meet those standards and also teach kids to love poetry (even while learning to enjoy it yourself)? Poetry is not as hard nor nebulous as it sometimes seems, and my presentation will give you the tools to have fun with it.
