Call of the Highland Sky #PoetryFriday

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

Wasn’t planning to post this week, but then my small group met yesterday, and I wrote this poem, inspired by a YouTube video.

For your weekly poetry rabbit hole, fall into the Poetry Friday Roundup with fantastic poet Irene Latham!

  1. Oh goodness Laura this is gorgeous! I love that second stanza. We can all learn a lot from those lines. So glad you found unexpected inspiration. Thanks for sharing this with us!

  2. Of course she slurps the wild sky! As we all should! And how much do I love you and your yellow mittens?! (I got your new book in the mail yesterday. Adorable, top to bottom!) Congratulations! xo

  3. Giving us another way to ‘see’ that calf, already a maverick to choose to ‘slurp the wild sky’ is wonderful, Laura. Happy Friday!

  4. Slurping the sky! Perfect! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com

    1. Thanks, Carol! My challenge to myself was to try to make more of the moment then it was when looked at logically, if you know what I mean. I’m so glad the last line landed with you!

  5. I echo all of the comments above! That is a delicious, “wow” final stanza and line. We should all be trying to slurp the sky and life and now the wildness of the autumn colors followed by the snow and frost. Should be a motto! (They are way ahead of us up in southern Vermont and NH and more but those were the places I visited the last couple of days.) Terrrrrific, Laura.

    1. Thanks, Janet–all three of your messages came through no problem. Your autumn photos were gorgeous on Facebook. Lucky you! Our Minnesota fall this year is much more muted and gradual than usual. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, as it’s drawn out and the mild temps and discovery of new patches of fall color are going on longer than we usually get, which is a gift! But the colors aren’t as bold as usual, either. Sigh.

  6. I love that playful calf slurping wild sky! Beautiful poem. So glad you shared it with that cute photo.
