Cows [15 Words or Less Poems]

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines are here)!

Photo: Laura P. Salas

I took this picture in Ireland. I always picture sheep and cow barns as so warm and cozy, but the reality rarely supports that!

This picture makes me think of:

  1. Waiting in line for my turn on the slide
  2. Horses/mules that used to be used in mines, living underground in the dark for years
  3. Cows who ride roller coasters

And, here’s my first draft.

It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count:>) If you leave a poem in the comments, and if it’s 15 words or less, I’ll try to respond!

Laura I love your roller costar thyme

    1. I love the idea of cows as meditating rather than being bored (which is how I think of them). And that “glorious/chewing.” Love.

  2. Laura, I can feel the warmth and smell the hay in the barn. Cute, but sad. My verse comes from observing a nearby tract of farm land reduced to a kudzu-covered silo and a few cows grazing on what is now a massive development of “copy-cat” houses. Every time I drive by the site, I envision the following:

    Conundrum

    Elsie and Daisy
    lifelong friends
    chew their cud
    ruminate
    ponder:
    “do we raze or remodel?”

      1. Now why didn’t I think of that? Because you’re the word guru! That would have been perfect. Alas, maybe next time.

        1. I think that at least 10 times every Thursday–y’all come up with so much cleverness. I’m always struck by a desire to pull my poem and write a new one!

  3. Laura, I love your creativity. Turning that picture into a roller coaster ride for cows. Ha! Love it.
    Here’s my effort.

    Hurry, Farmer!

    Get milking done!
    Standing here isn’t fun.
    We’d rather go grazing
    outside in the sun.

    1. Yes! They look so bored and dark and cramped:>( I love poems of direct address like this.

  4. Love the roller coaster ride, Laura–a bit more cheery than my contribution…

    Calveless cows
    with udders full,
    Pastoral life?
    their eyes say, Bull!

  5. Future Steaks

    Beefsteak ballet
    We wait for more hay
    ‘Til we’re fat enough
    We live another day.

    1. Oh, dear. I kind of wish I wasn’t having roast tonight:>/ That opening line is fantastic!

  6. Roller Coaster Cows! Now I’ll always have them in mind, Laura-“shaking and quaking”. So funny. Your picture brought back such a strong memory to me. Amazing what those pics do!

    In My Mind’s Eye

    Poetry love:
    Granddad reading “Moo-Cow-Moo”.
Nose like soap, tail like rope–
    Laughing

  7. FAMILY PHOTO

    We are posed,
    though ill at ease.
    Tell us when
    and we’ll say “Cheese!”

    1. Awkward Farm Photos? Hehehe…and the idea of cows saying “cheese” makes me chuckle.

  8. OK, I had to do a lot of cutting to keep this to 15 words.

    FREEZING BARN

    Standing in the barn.
    Ready to scream.
    My udders so cold
    I may give ice cream.

    1. Joy, this is probably my favorite poem of yours. The 15 words limit served you well here–funny and tight!

  9. Line us up
    Here we are
    Making sure
    We can’t go far

    Just you wait !

    Anne McKenna

    1. This made me think of preschoolers all “leashed” up together on a walking field trip!
