Poetry Friday and Poem-a-Day: #13

crab dances on beach
tickling sandy ivories

???? playing summer’s song

Happy Poetry Friday! This haiku was inspired by a crab running across the beach on Survivor this week. Those tiny pointy legs that run so lightly across the sand always surprise me (as much as those periscope eyes freak me out).

I’m traveling around the Kidlitosphere today. I’m at Katie Davis’ blog with a video reading of “This Is the Book,” from BookSpeak! And I’m at Robyn Hood Black’s blog with the backstory to BookSpeak! and “Stellar Books,”?one of the several poems that got cut from the collection.

And you have until Sunday to enter a contest to win a free 45-minute consultation with Mentors for Rent (which I am 1/2 of). We love working with poets!

Anastasia Suen at Booktalking has the Poetry Friday Roundup today. Enjoy all the poetry goodness!

  1. Hi, Laura. I just got my copy of Book Speak and can’t wait to share it in the classroom. One of my favorite poems was “The Perfect Book.” I loved the voice of the well-loved book!

  3. so now i have this mental image of a crab playing at a piano bar calling for requests. “play ‘mack the knife!’ ” “play ‘under the sea!’ ”

crab haiku. sort of sounds yummy.

    1. Yes! It’s like a scene from Little Mermaid or something. Huh. Thanks for that. But really, they’re so weird-looking that they NEED to be a cartoon.

  5. I agree with David — crab haiku sounds delicious. 🙂 I love the idea of a crab tickling sandy ivories. Fun and makes me feel ticklish. How do they run sideways so fast?

  7. (I’m still cracking up at David’s comment.…) Fun, Laura, thanks. And thanks for bringing BOOKSPEAK to my blog today. Happy Poetry Friday!

  9. Hi there Laura, I enjoyed this poem a lot! I’ve been missing the beach and this has made me nostalgic. You are truly busybusybusy! Fats is simply loving your Bookspeak! I can’t wait for her review of the book. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Myra! I walked the beach several times during my recent Florida trip. It had only been a year, but there’s something about the beach…one of the few things I miss about Florida:>)

  11. I have a fond memory of my students and I playing/chasing with crabs on a sandy beach in Costa Rica, so your poem has a very personal connection. They really do dance. Lovely to ‘hear” Katya!

  13. Looking forward to checking out everything you are doing! The crab haiku paints such a visual, love the “summer’s song.”

  15. What a day you had yesterday! Sorry to get here so late to the party, but I, too, love your piano-playing crab!

    1. Thanks, Mary Lee. And, yes, yesterday was a big day! Whee! If that crab will keep playing piano, I’ll be happy to dance on the beach:>)
