#EquationPoem 14

This Friday morning, Irene Latham and Vikram Madan and I will be presenting about poetry at the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival! Virtual event all week–tix free. More info at https://www.usm.edu/childrens-book-festival/index.php

For National Poetry Month 2021, I’m posting an equation poem each day. Maybe with an image, maybe without. I needed something very accessible and doable this year! Maybe you feel the same way? I’d love for you to join me, and here are several options for sharing your own or your students’ equation poems:

  • in the comments below
  • on social media with #EquationPoem–and be sure to tag me, please! (@LauraPSalas on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook)
  • on the Padlet on my bookpage here

Here’s today’s equation poem. Randy and my trip to Washington DC recently happened to coincide with cherry blossom time! We’ve never been there during the brief period of explosions of white and pink blooms. It was such a treat. Especially since most of our time was spent walking outside, we were grateful for all the trees announcing spring.

And if you love equation poems, check out my Snowman-Cold=Puddle: Spring Equations, published by Charlesbridge and with gorgeous art by Micha Archer.

Happy poeming!

  1. Oh I would love to attend the poetry workshop with you Vikram and Irene! Will add that to my list.
Now this poem of yours and photo really speaks to me! Pa-boom!! Yes, I adore the spring blossoming so. And the poem is spare and gets the point across beautifully!!
    Today’s effort by me:

Green window greeting + buds on trees = morning happiness

I looked out and we truly have bud. Real ones. Here in the limited springtime zone. Your model helped me. Thanks, Laura.

  2. I signed up for the festival and hope I can work in your workshop with my class schedule.

I worked with a student yesterday on equation poems. We are experiencing a large amount of rain. She wrote
    dark clouds+rain=flood.
Not knowing how true it was. The playground was a pond and driving home was treacherous.

    I wrote alongside her:

    recess-kids=lonely.

We each did a canva design. I may try to share these this Friday.

My riddle-ku/ bayou-ku workshop went well on Saturday. I didn’t keep any of the poems because they took them with them. I wish I had thought to keep a copy, but again we were writing in a tent in the rain, so I felt it was amazing we did it at all!

    Thanks for always inspiring me!

    1. Wow, I love those. And I love the two of you, creating side by side. So glad your workshop went well! I know what you mean. At YAC, I usually ask to take photos of pieces by students who would like me to share their work online. But it’s so hectic, I only get to that part about 1/3 of the time. Hooray for writing in a tent in the rain. I’m sure that was just enough of an adventure! Hope to see you Friday, but I know your days are full!

  3. Laura, I just found my comment for your equation poem on a different day. LOL Your photo and poem are beautiful. I love fireworks in the equation! Last week I wrote about forsythia blossoms being fireworks.
