Fee-Fie-Foe-Fairian: Surprise! I’m Vegetarian! #PoetryFriday

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

Last week, I shared a poem from my book A Need to Feed. Some of you asked when it was coming out, and the answer is that it’s been out for years. It’s part of a little paperback set of books I did for teachers called 30 Painless Classroom Poems. Each book has poems, notes from the poet (me!), a teaching guide from an awesome educator (like Mary Lee Hahn, Colby Sharp, and Marcie Flinchum Atkins), and tips on using poetry in the classroom (that section is the same across all six books). These are indie-published books from 2014, and they exist because I kept getting “almost” sales to publishers on them. Poetry is so hard to find a home for. So, I put these books together myself. They have sold at least dozens of copies over the years, so you better grab them quick if you want them. Haha! For info, click below:

Now, today, I’m sharing another poem from my readalouds page! This one’s called “Fee-Fie-Foe-Fairian: Surprise! I’m Vegetarian!” It’s from Fairy Tale Garage Sale, which has the concept that all the characters in fairy tales are selling off their unneeded items. This one’s from the Jack and the Beanstalk section.

A Note from the Poet:
Sometimes, I just have a gross sense of humor, and that’s what I’m showcasing in this poem. Can you imagine if a vicious giant had to stop eating meat? I love that idea!

And here’s the video.

For lots more wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with Jama at Alphabet Soup. It’s sure to be a delicious meal!

  1. This is such a fun poem, Laura! I love the rhythm and the twist on the ogre’s diet. And even though it’s funny, his grumpy personality shines through. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I love your sense of humor. Who else would think of writing a poem from an ogre’s point of view. Ha!

  3. Ha ha, Laura. Your imagination knows no bounds! I have Why-Ku on my kindle, used it in my final years of teaching. I didn’t know this background though. I imagine teachers would love these!

  4. I love your ogre poem. It’s so fun and I know kids must love it. The idea of an ogre becoming vegetarian is a funny concept. You’re so amazing when it comes to getting your work out there.

  5. How fun! Never, ever did I think of trying to rhyme the word vegetarian…and with humor! Bravo

  6. Thanks for all the read aloud videos! You were a “guest” in my online classroom for a week’s worth of #picturebookaday videos!

  7. Thanks, Laura. I enjoyed the ironic juxtaposition of the evil boy-eating ogre with your sweet voice reading it.

  8. Fee-fi-fo-fun-fun-fun, Laura! Thanks for sharing your Painless Classroom Poems series, too. Your resources are fabulous. : )

  9. Such fun to read aloud in character! And for you to write, too, I’m guessing. That third stanza is a hoot!

  10. I love “Fee-Fie-Foe-Fairian: Surprise! I’m Vegetarian!” I smiled all the way through, and still smiling now, and laughing 🙂 Reminds me of Ogden Nash and Shel Silverstein, great read-aloud too, thanks Laura!
