Floor Bunny [15 Words or Less]

Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.

Original art by Michael Cina "Bunny Hopscotch Board"
Photo: Laura P. Salas — This is a filtered version of original art by Michael Cina “Bunny Hopscotch Board”

When I went to my WW meeting a couple of weeks ago, there was an art display throughout the mall. I love this bunny version of hopscotch!

This image makes me think of several things:

  1. a giant floor puzzle for babies
  2. lawn chess or checkers
  3. color-by-number sheets from kindergarten

And here’s my first draft.

Friends, I’m flying down to visit my dad today, so I won’t be able to comment. I’ll be reading your poems, though, when family gets to be too much ;>)

It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

  1. Good Morning Poetry Brains! It’s so nice to get to Thursday. I must admit to being eager for the end of this school year…a HS graduation in my family has raised the emotions to high tide around here.

Here is my “to the rule” draft. I hate going outside the rule of 15. I love the challenge of making it work.

    Roygbiv
    for rainbow
    Bobbbrrfor bunny
    sidewalk funny
    hopscotch row

And, here’s the draft I like better but over 15 words. Thanks for the fun, Laura. I so enjoy these prompts on Thursday mornings.

    One blue
    two black
    three orange and brown
    four purple
    Blue repeats
    six to eight
    rosesin my crown

    1. Linda, I love the roygbiv acronym. The colors put me in a playful mood. I, too, love the challenge of “write tight.”

  2. eeeek! I forgot to comment on Laura’s draft! Sorry about that. The idea of the sky being numberless is brilliant. You take simple things and elevate them–in a way that makes it look so easy.

  3. Safe travels Laura. What a memory you have uncovered for me. The sidewalk from the front porch out to the street in front of the home in which I grew up had cracked, over time, to make the perfect hopscotch for hours and hours of fun. That memory has nothing to do with my verse!! lol

    A Bunny’s Nightmare

    Oh the shame
    can’t show my face
    cotton tail black
    such a disgrace.

  4. “Hop“scotch on a bunny! How fun!

    The New Girl

    Breathe deep.
    There’s no shame
    if I mess up.
    It’s just a game.

    I hope.

  5. Love the depth of your poem, Laura. And Linda, the “roses in my crown” feeling after a successful hopscotch challenge–Yes! Martha, I felt for your poor bunny with the dirty tail! Cindy, boy, you captured the hopeful, anxious state of being the new girl.

    Coloring

    Outside lines
    my colors loud
    Happy Bunny?
    Hungry Alien?
    Speedy Sports Car?
    All stand proud!

  6. You’ve got me thinking about a whole slew of animals playing kids games.…

    Field Day for the Animals

Who can hop from square to square?
The hopscotch champ is hopping hare!

  7. Poem by Jessica Bigi

    May Day Games

    fly’s and spiders
    too many eyes
    dizzy
    spinning
    doubled vision
    color blind
    buzzing
    spinning
    double digit days

  8. poem by Jessica Bigi

when spider and fly rolled dice
    double numbers
    tripped colors
    buzzing
    Dizzy
    spinning
    too many eyes
    too many dice

  9. Laura you’re poem is just lovely I love the “sky is numberless.”

    Throw the rock
    Land on one.
    Hip-hop-scotch
    So much fun!
