Everglades–With a Dash of Salt: a 50 State Poems Poem

Hi teachers! The last poem I’m going to share for now from my new 30 Painless Classroom Poems book, Wacky, Wild, and Wonderful: 50 State Poems, is the one inspired by my home state, Florida.

Florida: Everglades--With a Dash of Salt

Note: Florida Bay is an 850-square-mile estuary at the southern tip of Florida. The freshwater flowing south through the Everglades meets the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean. This sawgrass-covered bay supports both freshwater and saltwater wildlife, including the endangered American crocodile, alligators, dolphins, manatees and many more.

A Note from the Poet:

A place where both saltwater and freshwater fish and animals seems so unreal to me. That’s why I tried to give this poem a surreal, sort of spooky mood. And because sharks and gators freak me out, I had to end with a threat.

  1. Good morning Laura. Hope this latest winter storm is not as bad as predicted. I like your spooky, eerie take in the poem. I have made the trip through the everglades in the northern part of Florida. One time only and I have no plans to do it again. No saltwater but it freaked me out. The silence was surreal. No sharks or dolphins but the crocs and gators had me feeling as if I had turned to stone. I didn’t even want to breathe. Another great poem.

    1. Oh, Martha, your description took my breath away. Shudder. That freaks me out, too. Gators/crocs just do something really primeval to me.
