Found Poems with the Poetry Sisters [Poetry Friday]

Happy Poetry Friday! Last month, we Poetry Sisters wrote classified haiku. This month…found poems! This past month has been chaos for me, as our younger daughter Maddie prepared to move to Scotland for 2–3 years doing social justice work. We’re so proud of her, but it’s tough to have her going overseas for so long. The house is a mess. So am I. So is my writing. I like found poems, though I haven’t written many lately. Addendum: And I do them a bit differently from some people. Here’s an article I wrote about found poems years ago. Here are two quick ones I wrote this month. One thing I love about poetry…I can escape my stress for a few minutes while working on a poem!

"Skyward," a found poem by Laura Purdie Salas
My found poem “Skyward” was made of words found in the first paragraph of “Wish You Were Here,” by Kalee Thompson, about space tourism in the August 2015 issue of Popular Science

"Man-Eaters," a found poem by Laura Purdie Salas

My second poem, “Man-Eaters,” came from this postcard I received about a program at the University of Minnesota Libraries called “Lions in the Balance.”  Below is the postcard with the words I used highlighted. I also used “lions,” which I don’t think I ever actually highlighted :>)

Instead of linking to the rest of my Poetry  Sisters’ poems here like I usually do, I’ve created a padlet where I hope to show all of them! And you can add your own found poem, too. Just click here to go to our Padlet, click twice on any open space not covered by a note, and leave your poem. Please put your name and poem title in the Title spot. You do not have to create an account to participate. Also, if you post your own poems on your own blog, you can simply link to the blog post in the padlet, and it will feed in for people to read it. In there, you can click on the + icon to link to your own post, website, etc., or click on the camera icon if you want to share your found poem as an image. Have fun! And enjoy the Poetry Sisters’ poems in there, too. Aren’t they all fabulous?

Created with Padlet
