Frosted Snowflake [15 Words or Less]

Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.

Snowflake Cookie
Photo: Laura P. Salas

You know I can’t resist a beautiful cookie, and while in DC I got this sparkling, lovely, iced snowflake cookie. I can’t remember which bakery, but it’s probably just as well. Frankly, it looked better than it tasted. (I mean, it was fine, and I ate the whole thing, but it didn’t knock my socks off.)

This image makes me think of several things:

  1. the first time I saw snow as a kid, on vacation in Colorado from Florida
  2. the way trees all look frosted after a snowfall
  3. the baking competition shows I love on TV

And here’s my first draft.

fresh snow

It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

  1. Wishing you and all the peace that poem seeks.

    snowflakes
    melt
    on
    my
    tongue
    like
    cookie
    sprinkles

    1. I love the spare and delicate moment your poem portrays–and even gives me, in the moment of reading.

  2. Looks Can Be Deceiving

    Frothy blue frosting
    tempts tastebuds
    to
    bite-bitter, crumble-crunch
    disappointment

(I looked up frothy and found this definition that gives double-meaning to the word: light and entertaining but of little substance)

    1. Yes! I love iced cookies, but I always buy very pale ones–that dye in the darker colors is horrible. Love your word-wrangling in the 4th line, margaret!

  3. Isn’t it funny how we react to things differently based on the time of year?

    Full Circle

    Seeking snowflakes
    winter brings.
    *
    Sick of snowflakes -
    seeking spring.

    1. Love how your sounds even echo each other in the 1st and 3rd lines–clever!

  4. That is a pretty cookie- but I would have chosen something chocolate!

    Beauty Queen’s Lament

    Glitter and glitz
    cover up plain
    the older,
    the harder
    it is to maintain.

    1. Hahaha–oh, this is so true! When I see heavily made-up women of a certain age, part of me applauds the self-care and part of me feels sad IF that’s the only value she thinks she has…

  5. Approaching St. Patrick’s Day already and wasn’t it just a few days ago we were thinking hearts and flowers? Laura, your photo for today looks like a painting; a vintage blue bowl holding the perfect cookie. I immediately jumped to color meanings. I know one should not have to explain one’s verse, but brown is the cookie as it comes from the oven.

    Cookie Fortunes

    Brown for warmth,
    comfort
    Blue for quiet
    trust
    White for
    wholeness
    Gold for
    success

    Serendipity!

    1. I love how much you can tell about a person from her poems. These are such comforting color interpretations. Love the play on fortune cookies.

  6. These are all just great!

    Patterns

    A delicate snowflake
    whispers to me
    Individuality
    Equality
    Unity

  7. Suzanne, the words individuality and unity used together are powerful! I love the thought that every snowflake is different.

  8. I can see some green poking up here in PA. Not so in Maine, but I’m not there now, am I!
Your choice…is this about a cookie or a real snowflake?

    Snowflake Song

    I’m icy flake
    please partake
    I will melt
    upon your tongue
    my praises sung

  9. Glean and gather, love the thought Buffy. Growing up in the south we “gleaned and gathered” fresh snow for mother to make the most delicious snow cream. Those days don’t exist anymore.

  10. Laura I have to agree those cookies always look better than they taste! Today I’m combining weather phenomenon with a positive twist.

    Sugar Bomb

    Icy sugar flakes
    dance on my tongue.
    Tastebuds explode in bomb cyclones
    of sweet delights!

  11. Well, here in Utah it was starting to look like spring, not a speck of snow, and then yesterday we got dumped on by 5 or 6 inches. March snow melts pretty fast, but still! Maybe that’s why I was more interested in the colors than the snowflake.

    Got the cookies blues,
    sittin’ on my plate.
    Meant for eating,
    and ain’t been ate.

    —Kate Coombs

    1. Haha–I don’t think I’ve ever had the cookie blues. If they’re on my plate, they been ate. Love the voice here!

  12. poem by Jessica Bigi

    Wintery Bakery

    ginger spice
    snow-people
    iced star hearts
    marshmallow-mustaches
    sipping hot coco
    cookie-cutter smalls
    giggling
