Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.
You know I can’t resist a beautiful cookie, and while in DC I got this sparkling, lovely, iced snowflake cookie. I can’t remember which bakery, but it’s probably just as well. Frankly, it looked better than it tasted. (I mean, it was fine, and I ate the whole thing, but it didn’t knock my socks off.)
This image makes me think of several things:
- the first time I saw snow as a kid, on vacation in Colorado from Florida
- the way trees all look frosted after a snowfall
- the baking competition shows I love on TV
And here’s my first draft.

Looks Can Be Deceiving
Frothy blue frosting
tempts tastebuds

(I looked up frothy and found this definition that gives double-meaning to the word: light and entertaining but of little substance)
Yes! I love iced cookies, but I always buy very pale ones–that dye in the darker colors is horrible. Love your word-wrangling in the 4th line, margaret!

Hahaha–oh, this is so true! When I see heavily made-up women of a certain age, part of me applauds the self-care and part of me feels sad IF that’s the only value she thinks she has…

Approaching St. Patrick’s Day already and wasn’t it just a few days ago we were thinking hearts and flowers? Laura, your photo for today looks like a painting; a vintage blue bowl holding the perfect cookie. I immediately jumped to color meanings. I know one should not have to explain one’s verse, but brown is the cookie as it comes from the oven.

The Perfect Snow Day
Snowflake cookies tumble
on branches, sidewalks, lawns.
Flocks of children
glean and gather
sugary snow.
This reminds me of children “gleaning and gathering” the windfall of a piñata. So lovely!
I can see some green poking up here in PA. Not so in Maine, but I’m not there now, am I!

Glean and gather, love the thought Buffy. Growing up in the south we “gleaned and gathered” fresh snow for mother to make the most delicious snow cream. Those days don’t exist anymore.

Well, here in Utah it was starting to look like spring, not a speck of snow, and then yesterday we got dumped on by 5 or 6 inches. March snow melts pretty fast, but still! Maybe that’s why I was more interested in the colors than the snowflake.
