Poem-a-Day: #9 and (Gulp) a Poem Video

forbidden Gobstoppers.
Dread resurrection.

One of my goals for 2012 was to put some videos online. Videos of me reading poems.?A few clips from school visits or public events. Bits with me and Lisa Bullard answering some writers’ questions on behalf of Mentors for Rent. So many options. The only problem? I’m not comfortable being on video. Ugh. Luckily, Renee LaTulippe at No Water River invited me to participate in a series of poets reading their poems this month. I was insecure about it, but I dove in and gave it a try. I haven’t seen the final results yet, and I’m at a school visit all day today, Monday. But you can see how I did (gulp) by visiting No Water River and checking it out. I’m happy to say it wasn’t as painful as expected (of course, I say that not having seen the video!), and I will have another?poetry video online soon.?

  1. I thought your video was wonderful. I was pretty amazed seeing the snow, though! And loved the interview with Renee. You look just lovely on video; your warmth shines through in your smile and your voice, too!

    1. Thank you, Janet! That’s so nice to hear. It’s odd recording it by myself but trying to imagine me talking with all of you, my online friends. But I hope to get better. Renee did a terrific job of reassuring me and making the process as painless as possible.

  3. I agree with Janet! I love the quietness and warmth of your video juxtaposed against the bit of mischief in your eyes at the end — and what a great signoff! I left your final smile a wee bit longer than I normally would just because it puts a huge grin on my face. Thank you so much for participating — I’m honored your first video experience was for NWR!

    1. Aw, thanks, Renee. Your VERY detailed instructions were great. I am a rule follower, and I figured as long as I did those steps, I’d be OK!

  5. I will second everyone else-your video was great. You were so enthusiastic about the book and the poem was given with high humor. Thanks Laura. (You now should do more videos!) And-sorry about the gobstoppers.

  7. The video was terrific, Laura! I love seeing you in your own environment. Like you I have a goal to do more video stuff. I find it fun. I think you are really coming into your own as a speaker.

    1. Thanks, Susan. I am OK with it. Wish I didn’t keep squinting, but the snow was so bright! Oh well. I’m hoping to do more and get better at it, so this was a good first step!

    1. Ugh, so far, nothing. Thank goodness. I THINK he only got one tiny bag of 3 mini-Gobstoppers, so maybe we won’t be getting a rainbow…
