Haiku to Welcome the New Year

Happy Poetry Friday! Welcome, everyone! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

We’re changing things up for 2020 and posting on the last Friday of the month. Or, you know, we kinda failed to get our act together for the First Friday, and…well, never mind. We’re here now, and that’s what’s important. Thank you, Liz Garton Scanlon, for being the glue that holds our group together!

This month, we’re doing haiku to look forward to 2020 or backward at 2019. (By the way, on Jan. 2, I shared this brief poem about the beginning of 2020, too.)  I was mall-walking before WW on Tuesday, and I was so annoyed to discover I didn’t have my earbuds. What? No audiobook to listen to?! But instead, I wrote this haiku  :>)

And a few more:

Swept up in time’s rush
Surging through the years’ twin bluffs
Riding the rapids

Thoughtfully made goals
     wait on a pristine paper–
Untouched since New Year’s

Each day is a new land
     A year of travel awaits
           Perception is truth

  1. Love reading about those “thoughtfully made goals”, know it’s been a whirl of a month, Laura. Yes, agreed, “long count in awe” is good!

  2. “not getting our act together” has never felt so right…I’m glad we waited until our themes and group bloomed into exciting plans for 2020. I ADORE your “I’m through counting down” haiku. I’m posting that by my desk. Onward and up, 2020, until we are overflowing with awe! Grateful for your friendship, Laura, always.

  3. “Losing count in awe” — yes. 🙂 I, too, feel like the new year hits and I’m still processing the old. Loved what you said in the Jan. 2nd post (“I do not feel ready for 2020–in so many ways. But time doesn’t pause just because we need time to catch up”) — I can relate! My thoughts on today’s PF post are along the same lines. 🙂

Here’s to riding the rapids of 2020!

  4. Laura, your image poem is so dreamy and filled with inspiration-Count on up…One of your haikus made me stop and think about my goals surrounding my one word: balance
    Thoughtfully made goals
    wait on a pristine paper–
    Untouched since New Year’s
(off to yoga to find my balance)

  5. I adore that switch up there — counting down… no! counting up and lost in awe!! That’s what I needed to hear today. <3

  6. I enjoyed each of these, but my favorite is counting up in awe. May we all find many good things to count this year.

  7. “Thoughtfully made goals untouched” — I can relate! I love the sky/cloud image, Laura.

  8. ooooh, I do love counting up books rather than counting down days. What a lovely perspective! I’m keeping it for myself. haiku are so fun. I love thinking them up so much that my mind naturally counts out 5s and 7s. It’s fun!

  9. Not only the year… but where did January go? I can’t wrap myself around that! I love your busy mind, writing haiku when you don’t have an earbud plugged in. I’m way too old for earbuds, but I do try to keep poetry in my mind! ;0)

  10. I love the determination in your cloud poem, Laura. I’m definitely with you on the untouched goals–I’ve barely opened my calendar this year! One day at a time is fine with me.

  11. Yes to more “perception” out there to welcome the truths! Beautiful image with your “count up” haiku Laura, thanks!

  12. Yes to “Perception is truth” and more of it! Gorgeous image for your “count up” haiku, thanks Laura!

  13. I’m going to take your “counting UP instead of DOWN” as my mantra for this last year and a half of teaching!
