Poetry Friday: The Wolf (by David Elliott)

November 12, 2010 By Laura

In the Wild (Candlewick, 2010) is a delightful collection from David Elliott and Holly Meade, who also did last year’s On the Farm. I’d like to share a poem that captures the feeling of our Minnesota weather right now. Even though we don’t have snow yet (coming this weekend) and I live in the suburbs, I felt like I might walk out my back door and right into this poem.

The Wolf

She opens her eyes;
she leaves her lair.
She lifts her head;
she sniffs the air.
And then: Ahooooo!

The moon looks down;
a cloud drifts by.
She stands and waits;
there’s no reply.
And then: Ahooooo!

–David Elliott, all rights reserved

Terri has the Poetry Friday Roundup today at Rub-A-Dub-Tub. Go sniff the air, wait, and leave a reply by those poems that touch you in some way :>)
