Recipe for a Song

Poetry Friday logo by Linda Mitchell

Happy Poetry Friday! Welcome, everyone, and I hope you had a delicious and cozy Thanksgiving, if you’re in the U.S. (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

This month, the Poetry 7 and I wrote recipe poems. I’ve written a few before and enjoy them, but I struggled with this one. I couldn’t think of a topic. I rolled my metaphor dice and one die landed on “mirror.” So I started out writing a recipe poem for making a mirror. I thought about how you glaze a mirror and such. And you melt sand. But it turned out that making a glass and then a mirror is too MUCH like following a recipe, so it just didn’t have any magic in it. On the same die was the word “song bird.” So, I went with that. We have robins by the bushel out back, and I love that. So I wrote a recipe poem about a robin. It was tricky, too, as I had to avoid it actually sounding like I was cooking it! I’m sure this could use some more revision, but this is what I’ve got for now!

Here are what the rest of the group have come up with. And maybe you’re sharing yours too?

Ruth is hosting the Poetry Friday Roundup this week, and I’m thankful for that and for her heartfelt poems and posts. I’m also extremely thankful for the entire Poetry Friday community!

Also, if you’d like to write along with us next month, we’ll be writing poems inspired by the word “box.” So you could apply that word to your poetic form or theme or topic…take it where you will and have fun with it! We’ll be posting those poems on December 30, the last Poetry Friday  of 2022. Feel free to post your poem on your blog, our blog comments, on social media with #PoetryPals. Can’t wait to see what you do with “box”!

  1. I’m not sure why my comment came through as anonymous — this is Ruth, your friendly PF host for this week!

  2. So pretty and delicate. (Except, stuff.????) A cup of nest is the perfect visual — contrasting with that bountiful sky-serving to close. But I just love it all, Laura.

  3. Makes: one robin
    Serves: the sky
    !!!
Love this! I feel you made one poem and served the internet sky with this treat. Thank you!

  4. I love the ending, makes one robin and serves the sky. I think I misunderstood what a recipe poem is. I wrote about a recipe rather than creating a recipe. Oh, well. It’s not the first time and won’t be the last. I know that the PF community is accepting of all poets.

    1. Then we weren’t clear enough in our invitation! And your haibun is absolutely lovely!

  5. Laura you NEED to write that poetry recipe collection… Maybe you want to do an anthology, so it’s like real recipes, passed from people you know… But mostly yours. You have a knack, chica.

  6. Kelly is correct. You are the queen of recipe poems. I love this. There are so many wonderful lines, but I really love the stanza that includes “stuff with earthworm bits.”

  7. In avoiding cooking the robin, you’ve created an unusual kind of recipe poem in which you “denature” something that already exists rather than combining ingredients to create something new (except of course that it’s all fully “natured”). Know what I mean? For me, that’s where the magic here is. I’m sad that somehow I forgot about the end of the month and the Poetry Sisters brief…Happy holiday weekend, Laura!

    1. Ooh, interesting. I see that’s what most of the recipe poems I’ve written do. They look at a process or a thing created by a process–a waterfall, caves, etc. I guess my one about writing poetry is the only one about creating something brand new. Hmmm…food (ha!) for thought!

  8. Laura, I am so late to the PF gathering but the magic of Thanksgiving followed by my birthday with my little ones has kept me busy. Your recipe poem does have the touch of magic glowing through it, such as wings dipped in dawn. I wanted to add some magic and wonder to my poem but for now it is a WIP. Thank you for sharing your Recipe for a Song.

  9. Oooh…that “bowl of sunrise!” I’m going to print this one out to use with my students when we do a bird study!
