Spurious Sayings [Poetry Friday]

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

Here’s my final poem I wrote for the Madness Poetry competition created by Ed DeCaria–this is the one that kicked me from the tourney in the Final Four, where it was beaten by a fabulous Cinderella poem by Amelia Shearer. Our word was “spurious.”

I had a nature poem and this poem, and I ended up going with this one. I was trying to get out of my comfort zone a little bit. This poem is also quite a bit longer than my usual poems. (When you get to the final rounds of Madness Poetry, you are “allowed” more characters. Ack!) That was a challenge for me, as I prefer short poems. Anyway, this is my final poem from the Madness Poetry competition–it was great fun, and I recommend applying next year if you’re a poet. And if you’re not participating as a poet, but you’re a teacher, make sure to sign up to be a voting classroom!

And for lots of terrific poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with teacher and poet Heidi Mordhorst at My Juicy Little Universe.

  1. Yeah, I remember this one–both clever and timely and very effective for explaining the slippery word “spurious.” I don’t remember Amelia’s–I’m sure it was awesome–but I’m with Sally. This one’s a winner.

You should see if you can get a gig at the PoFo next year.…

  2. I loved your poem in the tournament and love it now! Yes it’s so timely as stated by others here too, you’ve hit on so many important areas especially for what our country is going through today, thank you for sharing it Laura–it sure is a winner to me!

  3. I can’t believe this poem didn’t win it for you. I love how you’ve attacked these ridiculous sayings with such humor and rhyme. Your poetry is win! win! for me.

  4. Great poem! Both of those “spurious” poems were wonderful. Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
