Vacation Time #PoetryFriday

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

Thanks for all your empathy and sharing last week when I shared a poem about sad books. You guys are the best. This week, I’m sharing another poem written for BookSpeak, but this one is actually in the book!

Vacation Time, a poem from BookSpeak, by Laura Purdie Salas

This poem’s also in a video I made recently! If you’re a teacher or librarian, you might like a video I just sent to my Salas Snippets subscribers. It’s about 20 minutes of my reading poems from BookSpeak and getting kids excited about reading as the school year begins. It’s suitable for all elementary ages and perhaps older, depending on your students. Just subscribe to my newsletter and I’ll resend the link next week to any new subscribers. The video will be available through September.

Ramona at Pleasures of the Page has the  Poetry Friday Roundup this week!

PS I’m going to be disconnected all weekend, so it won’t be easy to reply to comments. I’ll be reading them, though!

  1. It’s great to see all those things that happen to that book ‘on vacation’, Laura. And nice that you’re creating videos for classes! Wishing you a good weekend vacation, too!

  2. Love that you’re sharing poems from Bookspeak, one of my favorite books of poetry! I’m sending this post to my niece, a 3rd grade teacher, so she can subscribe.I wonder if our books have felt the lack of traveling this year, just like we have!

  3. Ha! I love this! I need to share this with my students. I spent a few hours weeding old and well loved books today. It’s always a bit sad to take books off the shelf that are too old by our criteria but not too old for me. I always bring home a dribble of books I just can’t part with before reading or reading again. I will think of these books as on vacation!

  4. A trip definitely IS overdue — for the library books and for us, too! Thanks for this wonderful poem!

  5. Another great poem from this book! I love the concept and especially that final clever line. I imagine kids could have some fun writing about where they’ve taken their books on vacation!

  6. Laura, since I am a book lover, I love your poem. When I was little, books took me to so many wonderful places during my vacation time at my Nonnie’s house. How wonderful that you keep providing great content for teachers. Enjoy your quiet time.

  7. I like your voice coming from book and the adventures it’s taken. Creating movies of your work takes some time…I’ve a couple I’m still working on for my watercolor class–good luck with yours!

  8. Love this adventure from book’s perspective Laura, and all the places book takes us too… Wonderful! I made a couple videos for my online watercolor class, I still have to add titles–they take some time to do–good luck with yours, thanks.

  9. I remember reading this poem to my poetry classes and many kids related to it! One class was first and second grade and the other class was third through sixth grade. We had a great discussion after reading it. It reminds me of one of my daughters reading a book under her quilt with a flashlight. I definitely think tweens, teens, and adults can relate to this poem. I do; I bring books on vacation all the time.

  10. Dear Disconnected Laura — Wonderful post, and what a great resource you’re providing via Bookspeak! :0) Here’s to the New School Year all around, in its many forms.…
