Today’s poem comes courtesy of the lovely Irene Latham, who is just as delightful in person as she is in her books and on her blog. I’m proud that she is a housemate now, as her newest book (out August 1) is with Millbrook Press, my Can Be… home. The book is Dear Wandering Wildebeest and Other Poems from the Watering Hole, and it’s a terrific collection of poems and short prose sidebars about African animals.? Here’s one of my favorite poems from this book that will be a great addition to a science classroom as well as just being awesome poetry for every reader.
to wait for starshine
to snort and paw,
puff and blow.
to charge like a bull
at the rodeo.
he’s strong as
an armored buffalo.
is the only way to go.

I love how much information she works into this poem–a poem that is still a feast of wonderful language. And the fabulous illustrations by Anna Wadham are another reason kids and grown-ups will return to this book.?Don’t miss this one!
