IRA Sunday — Presentations and a Party

Sunday was super busy. I went to the Children’s Literature Assembly board meeting first thing in the morning. CLA (you should join!) is part of the National Council of Teachers of English. I’m not on the board, but I’m organizing the Master Class (poetry, of course!) at the NCTE conference this fall.

I left a bit early because my nephew Gabriel is stationed a few hours away, and?I got to meet up for a tasty brunch at Caf? Adelaide.

Then I raced back to attend How Is a Poet Like a Scientist, organized by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong, featuring several poets from the Poetry Friday Anthology for Science. Speakers included Eric Ode (who was in the Olio), Amy Ludwig Vanderwater, Vida Zuljevic, and ?Shirley Duke. It was inspiring and practical!

That?afternoon, I stopped by Kirby Larson’s signing to buy a couple of lovely books. Then?I went to Janet Fagal’s session and heard her share her passionate message about getting poetry into classrooms. Get it, girls!

I was wiped out. I headed back to my hotel to vegetate before heading out, with Randy and Maddie, to Sylvia and Janet’s poetry get-together.?I mostly hung out with poets I already knew, but I did introduce myself to a couple of new people.?And that was the finale of my IRA-related activities. All in all, it was a really great conference.

  1. It sounds like such a wonderful week it’s been nice getting to read about you event it made me me fill like I was their also thank you so much Laura I had added another poem to 15 and had mesaged you one it is the first one that I have ever written like that have a nice day

    1. Thanks, Jessica–I’m barely keeping up with social media stuff–pry won’t get back to extra poems on 15 Words or Less. I’m doing well to respond to them all on the first round. Answering these Comments on my short break while at a Young Authors Conference, which I’m teaching all week. Then home to do copyediting on a tight deadline and work on a poetry project revision. You’re very prolific! You need to start a blog or at least a Facebook Page to share all your poems:) I just can’t keep up with all the work people send/Message/Comment me. Sorry!

  5. Thanks again, Laura, for coming to our “How is a Poet Like a Scientist,” being our camera-woman, and doing an on-the-spot poetry reading for us! Also, loved having you, Randy, and Maddie at our party too. Such a great time all around!
