I’m working with elementary school kids this week, and the theme is Writing with Muscle. I’m working with them on revising flabby first drafts into power-packed shorter poems. I did this lesson plan earlier this year for one day, and I’ve tweaked it a little bit, including sharing two fun online pieces:
Bob Raczka’s “What Is Poetry?” poem at Gotta Book
Irene Latham’s terrific revision of the brilliant Progressive Poem she organized during Poetry Month (not that the original was flabby, but it was, by virtue of the number of participants, pretty long)
I’m looking forward to seeing what these young writers come up with! Next week, I’ll share my lesson plan and also some student writing samples.
